Samuel Rabun Perkins, age 2, had his picture taken by his grandparents Toby and Taryn Washinger in front of the new downtown mural.
A corner in downtown Vidalia just got a little brighter! A mural indicative of Vidalia’s claim to fame – the sweet onion – was unveiled this week.
Tonya Parker, Executive Director of the Downtown Vidalia Association, said a mural had been her dream and with the backing of her DVA Board and the City Council, she was proud to see it come together just in time for the 44th Vidalia Onion Festival.
Ruth Williams English was commissioned to paint the mural. Parker said six artists submitted renderings and English’s work was selected.
The mural is on the side of the Mary’s M-Squared Design Firm near the Meadows Street Park.
“We live in a picture-taking world, and if you give someone something to take of a picture of, they will,” Parker said. “We hope that everyone wants to use the mural as a backdrop for their pictures and that they enjoy the painting for years to come.”
In addition to the new mural, English was the designer and creator of the metal onion that graces the fountain in City Park behind the Vidalia City Hall.
