Mrs. Laverne Gillis, age 82 of Glenwood passed away on Wednesday morning, April 21, 2021 at her home.

Born on August 6, 1938 in Tarrytown, she was one of nine children born to the late Samuel Daniel and Annie Maddox Lane.  She grew up in Soperton and was a graduate of Soperton High School.   In the late 1950s she met and married Wheeler County native, William Claude “W.C.” Gillis.   Mrs. Gillis had worked as a Seamstress for a number of years at Rosebud Manufacturing in Vidalia and at Oxford Manufacturing in Alamo before retiring.

She enjoyed sewing and spending time with her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters.

She leaves behind: her former husband, “W.C.” Gillis, Glenwood, GA, their children, Dale A Gillis (Brenda), Glenwood, GA, Mark Gillis (Connie), Lumber City, GA, Allison Jones (Larry), Thomson, GA, Mary Ann Dixon (Alan), Lyons, GA, her sister, Marlene Boyer, Rockledge, GA, grandchildren, Scott Jones (Julie), Brian Gillis (Hillary), Ashley Wyatt (David), Melissa Leggett (Matt), Rusty Mobley, Mitzi Phillips (Joe), great grandchildren, Baylea Hoover (McKay), Madi Junod, Carter Wyatt, Hunter Leggett, Katie Wyatt, Ryan Mobley, Joe Phillips, Lindsey Phillips, Megan Mobley and soon to arrive, baby boy Grant Gillis as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 24, 2021 from the graveside in Beulah Cemetery with Reverend K. C. Seabury officiating.

Her grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Her family will receive friends on Friday, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Sammons Funeral Home or friends may call at her home.
