Mayor Doug Roper

This past Monday on February 8th, the Vidalia City Council held its regular monthly meeting.  I would like to share with you the work your council conducted during this meeting.  As many of you may be aware by now, we recently hired a new City Clerk and Finance Director.  Amy Murray was administered her oath of office by Probate Judge Tina Lindsey and we welcome her to our Sweet Onion City.  Mrs. Murray’s hire was a result of long time City Clerk and Finance Director Bill Bedingfield retiring.  Having held this position for 14 years, Mr. Bedingfield turns over the reigns with the city being in an extremely solid financial position and we are grateful for his service.  The Council approved an employment agreement that will allow Mr. Bedingfield to further assist with the transition on an as needed basis through September 30, 2021.

Further action items included the following, all paid for from SPLOST:

Purchase of three portable fences for the Recreation Department.  This will aid in the Recreation Department utilizing our complex on Ezra Taylor with our spring sports.

Purchase of a 2021 Polaris Ranger 570 for the Airport to be used as a tug/utility cart.

Purchase of equipment to replace pump #3 on lift station #2 and upgrade softstart system.

Hire a contractor to pull the pump and inspect wells #1 and #2 to determine vibration issue and solution.

Purchase replacement diffusers and motors for aerators at land application system at our South Treatment Facility.

I would also like to note that at the end of January, the City Council met for our retreat and planning session.  During this time, we discussed and mapped out our priorities for this year and beyond.  Goals, objectives, courses of action and timeframes for completion were established for our short, mid and long-range priorities.  Stay tuned as we will be discussing these priorities in greater detail, but in the meantime, please know your City Council is working hard to represent the citizens of our community.  We appreciate your vote of confidence and it is a privilege to serve you.

Mayor Doug Roper
