The Toombs county Commissioners did some “trash talking” at their first meeting of the new year – literally.
At the January meeting of the Toombs County Commissioners Tuesday night, Chairman David Sikes said the Commissioners’ Office had recently received a call from a Toombs County resident complaining about trash along the roads. Chairman Sikes said that before COVID hit, the job of picking of trash was routinely performed by inmates with the Georgia Department of Corrections. However, with the virus rampant, inmates were not allowed to fulfill those duties.
Toombs County has temporarily hired a crew to pick up litter, but the Chairman said a lot less unsightly trash along the roads would be a problem if people would not throw out garbage and take to restrain items in the back of pick-up trucks that could blow out while driving.
“Toombs County is a beautiful place with beautiful people,” Chairman Sikes said. “Let’s show some character and keep our county beautiful.”
Sikes said he hopes to work with the cities in the county when people are more available to gather and incentivize volunteers to help clean up the trash and debris that litter the roads and highways in the area.
