The Vidalia Wrestling team took down the Toombs County Bulldogs en route to a 4-0 record on Friday to win the Area 2 Duals Title at H. Ralph Parsons Gymnasium. The Indians, who had never defeated the Bulldogs in the Duals (began in 2002) before Friday, slipped by Toombs 40-39 despite the Bulldogs going on an 18-0 run to set up a must-win situation for Vidalia and sophomore Brandon Beasley at 132. Needing a pin to secure the title, Beasley came through for the Indians, securing the win over their rivals.
The Indians also took wins over Swainsboro (48-36), East Laurens (60-24), and Washington Co. (72-12) to advance to the Area 2 Quads, which they will host on Friday (1/22).
After the meet, Vidalia Head Coach Bobby Blount was excited about his team’s performance “It was an exciting weekend for our team! This is the first time we have won the Region Duals Championship in wrestling since they began having the duals in 2002. Our guys stepped up and were willing to put forth their best effort, with some wrestling up a weight class to give us the best advantage. I couldn’t be any more proud of this team.”
Blount added that the team might have had a little extra incentive with a presentation to the group on Friday morning. “It was also special for this victory to come with us wearing our new singlets. The team had no idea we had ordered them, and we were able to present them to the guys that morning right before we got started.” (Courtesy of Vidalia High School)
