When the Georgia Supreme Court gives the approval for judicial circuits to begin jury trials again, Montgomery County will be ready.

At the September meeting of the County Commissioners, County Manager Brandon Braddy said Oconee Circuit Superior Court Judges Sarah Wall and Howard Kaufold had asked that the county approve $68,934 to install equipment in the courtroom to allow for video and audio recording so all areas can be observed as well allow for streaming on the web to comply with the law to allow for open courts. Cameras and audio equipment will be focused on the Judge as well as the plaintiff/prosecutor, defendant and the witness stand. Another camera will be positioned to provide for live streaming of the court to comply with the law of open courts.

Only one Commissioner had any objection to the request of the judges, Commissioner Greg Palmer. Palmer questioned the expense, stating it was "unbalanced" in his opinion.

With the exception of Commissioner Palmer, the Commissioners approved the request. The technology and installation will be purchased from SNL Integrated, and will be compatible with the equipment in the other counties in the Oconee Judicial Circuit.

Braddy said the funds will be moved from the General Fund using money the county has received as a portion of the CARES Act. If a second round of funding from the CARES Act is made available, the County Manager said those funds will be put back in the General Fund to cover the expense.
