The weekly statistics of COVID-19 have been released from three area school systems, and as of last Friday, the numbers have wavered only slightly for some and increased for another.

The Vidalia City School System reports of the 2,509 students enrolled in the system, there are current 5 positive cases with 70 students quarantined for exposure. The number of positive cases last week rose by 3 students over the previous report, and the number exposed more than doubled and now stands at 70 young people.  In addition, 3 employees of the Vidalia City School System have tested positive for the virus, with 3 current quarantined for exposure.

In all, the numbers show that 0.3 percent of students and employees in the overall system marked positive for COVID-19, whole the total numbers of those quarantined significantly increased from .0012 to 2.5 percent.

The number of students in face-to-face instructional mode in the Toombs County School System remained the same at 11 students, or 0.4 percent of students who are attending at the various school sites. However, the number of quarantined students rose to 77 students last week  over 59 for the previous week, and the number of system wide employees increased to 6 as compared to  3 for the last report and the count of employees quarantined doubled to eight adults.

The news is better in Montgomery County where Superintendent Hugh Kight announced on Friday that no teachers are currently marked positive for the virus and no teachers are in quarantine for exposure. Two students have tested positive, and there are 22 students and one staff member in quarantine.

Superintendent Kight adds that 4 students are scheduled to return to the classroom on Tuesday of this week, and 15 more on Wednesday.

The local school systems will continue to release their COVID-19 status on Friday of each week until the pandemic is no longer a major. All three systems have tailored their in-school instruction and are doing their best to ensure the health of students and staff.
