The August meeting of the Vidalia City Council was a night to honor the late Mayor Ronnie Dixon who passed away on April 1. In addition to the award presented to Mayor Dixon’s family from Dublin Mayor Phil Best on behalf of the Georgia Municipal Association, a State Resolution was presented by District 19 Senator Blake Tillery. The resolution was initiated by Senator Tillery and State Representative Greg Morris, who both reside in Toombs County.
Senator Tillery said Mayor Dixon was recognized statewide for his leadership and devotion.
"He was more than that; he was a friend," Sen. Tillery said. "He served in the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard. He loved and married his wife Sandy, and they had three children and 5 grandchildren. Ronnie was a die hard UGA fan, and his wardrobe was red and black throughout the year. He enjoyed watching his Bulldogs play, often making trips to the games with friends and family. He was a special man and deserves the honor of this Resolution."
Also making a presentation last Tuesday night was Clay Sikes, Principal and Founder of ESG, the City of Vidalia’s Public Works Department. Sikes presented scholarships in amount of $500 each to two Vidalia High School students for the Mayor Ronnie Dixon Legacy Memorial Scholarship. The recipients are Caiden White and J’ha ‘Deya Rhymes.
