Wesley Walker recognizedWednesday of this week is a special day for the City of Lyons and for a man who has vowed to serve and protect. At Tuesday night’s monthly meeting of the Lyons City Council, Mayor Willis NeSmith  proclaimed the day in honor of Lyons Chief of Police Wesley Walker.

Mayor NeSmith read a resolution proclaiming August 12, 2020, as Wesley Walker Day in the city. Walker has served as the Lyons Chief of Police for the past 8 years, and has made strides in improving the morale of the Lyons Police Department and its officers, as well as implementing community-based policing and revitalizing the DARE program in schools within the city. The Chief of Police also serves on the Lyons Lions Club Board of Directors, on the Board of Directors of Toombs County Family Connection and other civic duties.

Walker has served on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Chiefs of Police Association since 2010, and worked through the ranks to have served as the organization's President for the past year.

Chief Walker was not aware that he was going to given the honor Tuesday night, but says he suspected "something" when his immediate family gathered at the meeting. He went on to say, "I am surprised and humbled that my Mayor and City Council would do this for me. They hired me 8 years ago to do a job, and I do that every day to the best of my ability. I plan on serving as long as they will allow me to. I love Lyons and I love Toombs County."
