Hundreds of local citizens of all ethnicities came together Saturday morning in Lyons for Unity Fest 2020. Organized by Luther Wardlaw and committee, the first festival of its kind in the Toombs County area was designed to bring people from all walks of life together as one voice.
John Koon served as the Master of Ceremonies, and acknowledged Wardlaw and his committee for the dedication they put into making the event a success. Koon said that while the community had always presented in unity, current times require such events as a way to keep each other strong.
Special guest speakers filled the morning, as did music from every genre including gospel, country, Latina and more. Festival goers were offered free food during the event, and more food was given for them to take home. Voter registration and job search booths were set up as was the Census 2020 Bus for those who had not completed their Census could do so quickly.
Security and safety for the event was provided by the Lyons Police Department, Toombs County Sheriff's Office, and the Toombs-Montgomery Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Social distancing as well as masks and temperature checks were mandated during Unity Fest 2020.
