The Vidalia Indian softball team is preparing for their upcoming season that begins the first week of August and with the recent rule changes handed down by the GHSA regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, dealing with those changes can get challenging.

Lady Indian head coach Brad Thompson said, “We’ve had to do some studying of what they sent out and the verbiage that they used on some modifications and considerations and figure out which way we should go.  Number one is the safety of our kids, our spectators, our study body, people that are coming in to watch us play.  It falls back on the school if we don’t follow these guidelines and Athletic Director Tommy Dalley has been really pushing these things and I think we’ve done a good job.”

Thompson added, “We have a championship caliber team this year that I really think could make a push to win the whole thing so we want to do our part to make sure the season doesn’t get shortened.”

“One of the modifications is that the team on defense has to supply their own softballs so when a team comes into town, they’ll have their own set of softballs and we’ll have ours.  There are different kinds of softballs out there so you have to consider what are we supplying and what are they supplying to make the game balls even and fair,” said Thompson.

He added, “Social distancing is something that has to be done in the dugout and that plays a role either into how many I have on my roster or do some kind of make shift addition to my dugout and for the visiting team as well.  Another consideration is do you want to have a concession stand and how you want to do those sorts of things.  There’s a long list of things and we’re still reviewing it to see if we can make these things work.”
