Back in May of this year, longtime Vidalia Athletic Director “Chunk” Reid was named the 2020 Region 2AA Athletic Director of the year by the Georgia Athletic Directors Association.
In a ceremony held recently at Vidalia High School, Region 2AA Secretary Mike Thompson presented the award to Reid’s family.
“What a special day this is for me and Vidalia High School and for the Reid family as well, to honor such a man as Chunk Reid with the Region 2AA Athletic Director of the Year for the 2020 school year. The only thing that would make it better were if he were here to receive it himself,” said Thompson.
Reid who passed away almost a year ago is also a member of the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame and holds the record for wins in the state of Georgia for girl’s basketball with 881.
His daughter Amber Reid, talked about her father and how he loved his job and the Vidalia Indians. “He was die-hard Vidalia Indian and he took his AD job to the top. He made sure everything was perfect. For our family, it means so much that people are still thinking about him and still honoring his name, his legacy, and the things that he did for Vidalia High School and Region 2AA,” said Reid.
Reid, who coached the Lady Indians from 1970 until 2017 also coached girls’ softball for 16 years and won a State Championship. He even coached baseball for 2 years.
Amber went on to say that her father was a humble man that he always gave credit to those around him instead of himself. “He never liked to take credit for anything himself. He liked to make sure he gave credit to all the people around him,” Reid added.
During Reid’s tenure as girl’s basketball coach, he won 25 Sub-Region Championships, 11 Region Titles, finishing as state runner up in 2010. Over his 47 years of coaching basketball, Reid averaged 19 wins a year and only had 8 losing seasons in 47 years.
