The Toombs County Commissioners awarded the construction management of the new Toombs County Courthouse to TQ Contractors of Metter Tuesday night at its July meeting.

Toombs County Chairman David Sikes said the new courthouse will be built where the Ross P. Bowen Agriculture Building currently sets, with that facility to be moved to a new building site on Bulldog Road. The current courthouse will be demolished and the ground leveled to be even with the new facility.

The construction of the courthouse, along with the new construction of the Toombs County Detention Center, will provide a corridor directly from the county jail to the holding cells in the courthouse so inmates can appear in court and/or address other matters.

Construction is to being in January 2021, with a 22-month deadline for the new courthouse to be completed. The project will be funded through the sale of bonds and from the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax revenue collected from the county and from the cities of Lyons, Vidalia and Santa Claus.

The current Toombs County Courthouse was erected in 1964, and has outgrown its functionality.
