Soperton is on its way to being on the cutting edge of the future of energy production.
Last week, Illinois-based Lanza Tech announced it has launched a new company called LanzaJet, with $15 million from Suncor Energy of Canada and $10 million from Japanese trading and investment company Mitsui & Co., LTD, to construct a demonstration bio refinery plant in Soperton.
A bio refinery is where plant or animal materials are used to create energy and chemicals. It is predicted that the Soperton bio refinery will produce 10 million gallons per year of sustainable aviation fuel, and renewable diesel starting from sustainable ethanol sources, according to a press release.
The U.S. Department of Energy, coupled with backing from Japan's largest airline, All Nippon, will provide the initial investment of $25 million. Production is expected to begin in early 2022.
