After the June 9 count in the special election to fill the unexpired term of the late Ben Mitchell on the Lyons City Council, one vote stood between the candidates Kathy Benton and Sonja Eason. A recount was necessary before a winner could be declared.

Thursday afternoon, Toombs County Election Supervisor Carrie Alligood confirmed that the recount had been done, and the final and official vote shows Eason with 101 votes to Benton's 99, thus giving Eason the victory.

Eason will now be sworn into office as soon as possible and fill the term that will expire on December 31, 2021.
