May 26-- Longtime Vidalia Athletic Director Charles “Chunk” Reid has been named the 2019/2020 Region 2AA Athletic Director of the year by the Georgia Athletic Directors Association.

Reid who passed away in August of 2019 is a member of the GACA Hall of Fame and also holds the State record for wins in the state of Georgia for Girls Basketball with 881.

“Our family is very grateful for this award,” said his daughter Amber Reid. “My Daddy loved being a Vidalia Indian and he prided himself on making Vidalia High School one of the best schools in the area and the state.”

“We continue to be in awe of the love and the respect shown to Daddy. Thank you so much to the member schools and athletic directors of Region 2AA. Daddy would be so proud of this award and our family thanks you for your support.”

Vidalia City School Superintendent Dr. Garrett Wilcox said of the award “I think it’s great that the GADA would choose to recognize Coach Reid’s accomplishments in this very special way. Coach Reid was very involved in the organization and was respected by everyone in the state of Georgia. This is truly an honor which is much deserved.”

Reid, who coached the Lady Indians for 47 years (from 1970 until 2017) also, coached Girls’ Softball for 16 years where he won a State Championship. He also Coached Baseball for 2 years.

Vidalia High School Principal John Sharpe echoed his superintendent’s comments saying “I appreciate the GADA recognizing Coach Reid as Athletic Director of the year. Our Coaches and student athletes have helped establish VHS as one of the top AA programs in the state. Coach Reid’s dedication to excellence and hard work have helped to earn that distinction”

During his tenure as Girls Basketball Coach Reid won 25 Sub-Region Championships and 11 Region Titles while finishing State Runner up in 2010. In his 47 years of Coaching Basketball he averaged 19 wins a year while enduring only 8 losing seasons in those 47 years.

Current Vidalia Athletic Director Tommy Dalley said “there is not a more deserving person for this award than Coach Reid. He didn’t need another award to solidify his legacy or what he means to our community and our school system; but it is so fantastic that others around the state can acknowledge and honor the impact he had on so many that he came in contact with.” (Courtesy of Vidalia High School)
