2020 Smith ScholarshipGrace Smith’s mother and father Laura & Eric Smith, presenting the Grace E. Smith Scholarship to Erica HillmanFebruary 25--  On behalf of the Southeastern Technical College (STC) Foundation and the family of Grace Smith, STC announced the recipient of this year’s Grace E. Smith Memorial Scholarship. Congratulations to Erica Hillman, who was recently accepted into the Practical Nursing program. Erica resides in Twin City with her husband and two daughters.

This scholarship was established in 2014 by the friends and family of Grace Smith, the daughter of Eric and Laura Smith from McRae, Georgia and Community Hospice. Grace lost a 10-month battle with cancer on May 9, 2013, at twenty years of age. Grace’s choice to live in peace and hope for a future not only inspired her family and community but all who came in contact with her. Grace’s memory and her legacy of love and inspiration live on through the work and generous donations of those who support the Grace E. Smith Memorial Scholarship.

“This scholarship is possible because of the love and generosity of Grace’s parents, family, and friends, as well as that of Community Hospice. Eric and Laura Smith make a special effort each year to meet and get to know the scholarship recipient, and it has truly been a pleasure working with them and continuing Grace’s legacy in this way,” said Blythe Wilcox, Executive Director of Institutional Advancement.

Erica said, “I am simply honored to be receiving this scholarship. I know that Grace was a wonderful person and an inspiration to others. I want to say thank you so much for making it a little easier to get through college and become a RN. I can’t wait to become a RN and make a difference in lives. My mom, who is a nurse practitioner now, worked in hospice care as a RN for several years. I knew then it was something that I wanted to do.”

The $1,000 scholarship is awarded once per year to a student in a health care program; the first half in the spring semester and the second upon that semester's completion and registration for the next semester.
