An inmate at Telfair State Prison drew the attention of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation on August 21st after he allegedly made a call from inside the prison to the Atkinson County School District saying that there was a bomb.
The GBI says Kendall Alfonzo Stevens, age 37, made the call around 9:48 that Friday morning and the school administration took the threat seriously. Students were immediately dismissed for the day for what the system declares out of an abundance of caution and decided to even cancel all after school activities including the high school football game that night where Atkinson County Rebels were to square off with Georgia Military College Preparatory School in Pearson.
Stevens is ordinally from Savannah and the GBI didn’t say why he made the call, other than to say the intent of his threat was the disrupt school operations.
Kendall is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole on murder and other charges in Chatham County that occurred on January 1, 2021. He has been incarcerated on those charges since July 2024.
The press release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation regarding the phone call from the prison in McRae-Helena did not specify if the call was made from a contraband cell phone or other communicative device.
