It was another productive weekend for the Washington County Sheriff’s Office as law enforcement continued to work diligently to keep drugs out of the county and away from inmates at Washington State Prison. But this time, the delivery team got away with their crime before officers had a chance to incept the contraband from entering the prison.

Washington County Sheriff Joel Cochran reports that just after 10:00 Saturday night, his office was notified by a staff member at Washington State Prison that they had heard what appeared to be a drone making a drop inside the prison grounds. Deputies immediately began searching the area close to the facility and located a observed a suspicious vehicle and made a traffic stop.

During the stop, deputies found evidence of the prison drop and arrested the driver and passenger who have been identified as Kymani McLaren and Jovani Morris, both of Lithonia. The men have each been charged with multiple felonies relating to the contraband including drugs and other items prohibited by inmates.

As the deputies were making the traffic stop and arrests, Correctional Officers at Washington State Prison were doing an internal search of the facility and located a large bag of suspected contraband and turned the evidence over the Sheriff’s Office. The bag was determined to contain over 5 pounds of marijuana, nearly 15 pounds of tobacco, 151 grams of ecstasy, 13.7 grams of hydrocodone, several cell phones and chargers, and other miscellaneous items.

This seizure of contraband items and arrests come on the heels of a similar operation just last week, and again Sheriff Cochran reiterates that anyone considering bringing contraband into Washington State Prison by drone should think about it beforehand. The Sheriff said “We’d suggest finding a different hobby. History keeps showing the outcome is the same.”
