An inmate who was found dead in his cell at least one day after he died in Dooly State Prison in Unadilla had ties to the Lyons and Vidalia communities.

Dooly County Coroner James Hudson confirmed that Carlito Omar Soldiew-Acosta was found in his isolation cell last Saturday and had been deceased for at least 24 hours if not longer.

His body has been turned over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s crime lab, but foul play is suspected.

He was serving a life sentence for the December 2015 felony murder of Marie Warnock. He plead guilty to malice murder in March of 2019

Warnock was leaving a Sunday School gathering at Chatter’s Restaurant in Lyons when Soldiew-Acosta attacked her. She was found near her car having suffered head injuries and the cause of death was ruled as blunt force trauma. Warnock had served for 43 years as the secretary of the First Baptist Church in Vidalia.

The Department of Corrections isn’t releasing any further information on the inmate’s death at this time.
