Toombs County defeated Jeff Davis in the finals 46-33 to capture the championship.

Jose Balderas, Martin Santana, Gibson Wood, Areal Rodriquez, and Devante Willis all went undefeated in the tournament. The Toombs team will travel to the State Duals in Macon starting on Thursday. The team will try to add to the impressive streak at the state duals. The Bulldogs have finished 2nd, 2nd and 3rd the last three years at the state tournament.

Coach Bill Benton had this to say about the tournament, “I am so proud of our guys and how they accepted the challenge going into this tournament. I think they felt the pressure of trying to keep the streak alive and they were just extremely pumped when it was over and they had won it again. I’m just excited to be able to be going to the state tournament for the 7th straight year. We will be graduating a group of Seniors that have gone to the tournament all four years, and that’s exciting. We knew the Area Tournament was going to be a tough one this year and it was. Vidalia and Jeff Davis gave us all we wanted this year. We’ve had to battle injuries and sickness in the early part of the season and we finally got everybody healthy at the right time, and we needed every one of them. Coming into this season, we had graduated one of the best senior classes we’ve ever had come through and we knew it was going to be a challenge this year, but these seniors have stepped up and our younger guys have had to grow up in a hurry. This group may not be the most talented group we’ve ever had, but they know how to win big matches when everything is on the line and it showed this weekend. If we are going to place at the State tournament, we are going to have to step it up a notch, but I expect this group will do just that.”
