The Vidalia Indians had their 2019 season come to an end in the first round of the GHSA AA State Playoffs Friday night with a 20-3 loss in Jefferson County. The Indians who were forced to implement a new offense the first of the week when they found themselves without an experienced quarterback, put up a valiant effort, in a driving cold rain, but weren’t able to cross the goal line as they finished the year at 7-4.

The Indians opened the game on offense, but the possession didn’t last long as Jackie Robinson was stripped of the ball on the second play from scrimmage giving the Warriors the ball at the Indian 27 yard line.

But the defense which played extremely well against a much larger offensive line stiffened after a Warrior first down stopping Jefferson Co. at the 14 yard line on 3rd and 9. Jefferson Co. elected to go for it on 4th down and threw a pass into the end zone which was picked off by Kaylan Johnson giving the Indians the ball at the 20 yard line.

The Indians however were not able to move the ball and were forced to punt away from their own 27 yard line. Dawson Ricks kicked a 44 yard punt which put the Warriors back at their own 29 yard line.

On the first play of the possession, Jefferson Co. QB Carlton Brown swept to the right side of the line, but was stood up and stripped of the ball with Kaylan Johnson recovering at the Warrior 28 yard line.

The Indians were able to muster one first down moving the ball to the 17 yard line before having the drive stall. Vidalia then called upon Brennan Dooley who booted a 35 yard field goal with 1:23 left in the opening quarter to give the Indians a 3-0 lead.

The score remained that way throughout the rest of the quarter and the second quarter with neither team able to muster any offense. Then with 5 seconds to go in the half on 4th down and 4 from their own 26 yard line, Jefferson County would run a fake punt with Aquavious Hunter taking the snap and race 76 yards for the score giving Jefferson Co. a 6-0 lead going into the half.

The third quarter was scoreless, but going into the final quarter Jefferson Co. mounted a drive which began on their 35 yard line. Ten plays into the 12 plays into the drive on 3rd down, Jefferson County swept the left moving the ball to the 5 yard line. But an apparent holding penalty against the Warriors was instead called on the Indians, giving Jefferson Co. a 4th and goal from the 4 yard line. On the next play Brown scored to give the Warriors a 14-3 lead with %;40 to go in the game, following a successful 2 point conversion.

The Indians offense was only able to move the ball from the 14 to the 27 yard line and would be forced to punt. Jefferson Co. would not muster any offense and punt the ball back to the Indians. The Indians would move the ball to the Jefferson 39 but on the last play of the game would fumble the ball and Kydran Jenkins would pick up the ball and race 61 yards on the final play of the game to make the score 20-3 and ending the Indians season.

The Indians will say goodbye to eleven seniors who made the playoffs all four years and defeat Toombs County 3 of the 4 years, but have a great nucleus of players returning for what should be a great 2020 season.
