Treutlen vs TwiggsSeptember 6-- The Treutlen Vikings are 3 – 0 for the first time since 2009 after their 31 – 20 win over the Twiggs County Cobras Friday night at Bobby Driggers stadium in Soperton. Sophomore linebacker Danny Clements intercepted a Cobra pass and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown with 4:27 remaining in the game to seal the victory.

Things didn’t start well for the Vikings who were missing 4 two-way starters due to injury. To make matters worse, the Vikings turned the ball over 5 times in their first 6 possessions, with two interceptions and 3 fumbles. While the Vikings were doing nothing right, Twiggs County scored first on a three yard run by the quarterback with 4:13 left in the first quarter to take a 6 – 0 lead. The PAT attempt was no good.

Late in the second quarter, Treutlen began to start moving the ball and found the end zone for the first time with just 1:04 left in the half on a 2 yard run by running back Dorian Burns. Danny Clements split the uprights with the PAT and Treutlen led 7 – 6.

The Viking defense forced the Cobras to turn the ball over on downs back to Treutlen at the Twiggs 30 yard line with 20 ticks of the clock left before the half. Treutlen scored on their second play as the clock ran out in the second quarter when QB PJ Smiley hit Kamron Jordan on a beautiful fade pattern for a 12 yard TD pass. The PAT was no good and the Vikings led 13 – 7 at the half.

Twiggs County took the lead back on their first possession of the third quarter when Jeremy Curtis ran it in from 27 yards out. The two point conversion run was good by running back Ramello Sherman and the Cobras led 14 – 13 with 9:40 remaining in the third quarter.

Treutlen took the lead again on their next possession when Smiley found wide receiver Tim Blair on a 29 yard touchdown pass with 7:21 left in the third quarter. The two point conversion pass was unsuccessful and the Vikings led 19 – 14.

The Cobras struck again just 5 plays later on a 50 yard pass to Shelton Williams to retake the lead. The two point conversion was good giving Twiggs County a 20 – 19 lead with 3:45 left in the third quarter.

The Vikings took the lead for good with 1:27 left in the third quarter on a 12 yard PJ Smiley touchdown run. The two point conversion was no good and the Vikings lead was 25 – 20 heading into the fourth quarter.

After turning it over on downs on their next possession, the Vikings needed a defensive stop and got just that when linebacker Danny Clements read a swing pass in the flat perfectly and picked off the pass running untouched 37 yards to seal the Viking victory 31 – 20.

The Vikings are now 3 – 0 on the season and will be off next Friday night before traveling to Savannah on September 20 to face the Calvary Day Cavaliers with kickoff set for 7:30. Be sure to catch all the action on Sweet Onion Country 101.7 FM and online at www.southeastgeorgiatoday.com.
