September 3--The JR Trippe football team defeated Jeff Davis Middle School in their season opener this past Wednesday 26-20.

After the win Coach James Ferry stated, “It’s better to win ugly than to lose pretty. We played a solid first half, but we got complacent during half time and came out sloppy for the second.”

The Chiefs recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff to set up their offense on the Jacket nine-yard line. On the first offensive play of the season, AJ McClendon scored off the right side of the offense. Tristan Robinson scored the two-point conversion to give Trippe an 8-0 lead. Jeff Davis returned the favor with a long drive but failed the point after conversion to close the gap to 8-6. The chiefs fumbled on their next offensive play. The jackets immediately repaid the favor with a fumble of their own, which was recovered by Jacari Washington. After a few offensive plays, Antonio Barron scored off the left side with a 50-yard scamper down the opposing sideline. The point after touchdown sailed left. The Chiefs now led 14-6. With 1;38 to go in the half, AJ McClendon scored again from 40 yards out to give the Chiefs a 20-6 lead. On the next Jacket offensive play, Ahmelion Jones intercepted the Jeff Davis pass to end the half. Midway through the third quarter, Jacari Washington tip a jacket pass attempt into the arms of defensive end Dugan Johnson who outran the jacket offensive for 45 yards to the endzone. Again, the point after sailed left. After a few substitutions and a couple of Jeff Davis scores, the final score was 26-20.

Coach Grady Hart commented, “We played good, solid, hard nose defense for a half. We’ll work on extending that out for a whole game next week.”
