DalleyVidalia High School didn’t have to look far to find its next Athletic Director to succeed retiring AD Chunk Reid.

Longtime Boys Basketball Coach Tommy Dalley was named to the position Tuesday morning.

In appointing Dalley, VHS Principal John Sharpe said "We are excited about having Coach Dalley as our AD at VHS. Under his leadership, our basketball program has grown to one of the top programs in the state. He has a tremendous work ethic, high energy and builds positive relationships with students and staff members."

Sharpe, himself a Vidalia graduate and Vidalia Principal since2013 said the selection process was lengthy and there were many qualified applicants "We were fortunate to have such quality applicants on our coaching staff from which to select a successor to Coach Reid."

Dalley, the Vidalia boys’ basketball coach since 2008, has established himself as one of the top coaches in the state. He has led Vidalia to two Championship appearances and three other Final Fours.

“I am both excited and humbled by the opportunity. This is an exciting time as we move forward with the athletic program here at Vidalia High School and continue to build on the great tradition that has been established here at Vidalia.” Dalley added “I realize that I have extremely big shoes to fill.  Coach Chunk Reid is one of the most respected Athletic Directors in the state and his longevity in the position says a lot about what he has meant to Vidalia High School.”

One of the first things Dalley plans is to meet with each of the head coaches and try and get a feel for, “What their needs are for their programs, almost a wish list of things, that could help them improve their program,” and noted “I work every day with some of the best coaches in the state and I am sure they will be there with support during this transition. After all, we currently have a number of coaches who have served as Athletic Directors at various schools for years and we can learn a lot from their past experiences.”

Although Vidalia High School moved into a brand new school at the beginning of this school year, Dalley sees the need for improvement in some athletic facilities, “A couple of areas that we need to take a look at right away are the track and the Ralph Parsons Gymnasium.  We will always be looking for ways to improve our facilities and make sure our students have the best we can provide.”

Dalley begins his tenure immediately and observed, “It is great to be in a city that supports athletics like Vidalia.  Our school system is one of the best in the state and our kids are able to learn a tremendous amount about life with what our coaches are teaching on a daily basis.  I look forward to serving our coaches and trying to make their job a little easier.”
