February 19-- The J. R. Trippe Middle School Chiefs baseball team got their season off to a great start on Saturday, February 16 at a Tournament in Brooklet, GA. The Chiefs played three much larger schools coming away with victories in all three games. In the first game they beat Richmond Hill 2-1 with Walker Moncus scattering three hits over four innings for the win. Sloan Fountain pitched a perfect bottom of the fifth for the save. Fountain started the bottom of the fifth inning in relief of Moncus getting all three batters he faced for the save. Kaleb Bennett and Moncus led the offense going 1-2 and 2-3 respectively.

In the second game the Chiefs came from behind again to get a walk-off 7-6 win over South Effingham in the bottom of the fifth. Hagan Brantley started the game on mound going 1 and 2/3 innings. Again Sloan Fountain came on in relief and completed the game to get the win. Cason Banks scored the winning run on a wild pitch. Kaleb Bennett led the Chief offense going 3-3 at the plate.

In the third and final game the Chiefs won again in the final inning by a score of 4-2 over Effingham County. Cason Banks started on the hill for the Chiefs pitching 3 solid innings giving up only one run. Tucker McDonald pitched the last two innings giving up only one run and picking up the win. In the top of the 5th Walker Moncus hit a 2 run blast over the left field fence for a 4-2 lead. McDonald held Effingham scoreless in the bottom of the fifth for the win.

It was a good team effort in all three games with some good defense, pitching and hitting. The offensive leaders were Kaleb Bennett 5-7 batting, 2 walks and 5 runs scored, Walker Moncus 4-8 batting, 6 RBI’s and a HR, Cason Banks 3-9 batting. Sloan Fountain picked up a save and win with some good relief pitching.
