February 12-- The Toombs County High School Bulldogs wrestling team hosted the GHSA 2AA Traditional Sectionals on Friday and Saturday of last week and had nine wrestlers qualify for the State Traditional Tournament which will be held at the Macon Centreplex this Thursday through Saturday.

Toombs had two wrestlers win their weight division at Sectionals with Ricardo Santana (132 lbs.) and Rolando Tinoco (285) winning their titles.

Santana had a bye in the first round and won his second round match by a pin in the first round. In the second round he won by pin over Landon Camp of Pepperell to advance to the finals. His finals match was against Chance Mitchell of Fitzgerald and it was a good one. The match went back and forth early, but Santana did what he needed against the tough opponent and came away with a 9-5 decision to win his title.

For Tinoco at 285 lbs., he had a bye in the first round also. Tinoco won his second round match by a 7-1 decision and then defeated LaJavis Nelson of Lamar County by pin in the first round of the semifinals. In the Championship match Tinoco also faced off with a tough opponent in Luis Medina of Chattooga. Tinoco played a smart match and walked away with a 12-5 decision and the title.

Jose Balderas (106) took third place. He had a bye in the first round and then won by pin in the second round. Balderas lost his next match to Griffin Jarrett of Chattooga, but bounced back in the consolation-semifinals with a pin over Kohl Streetman of Rockmart. In the conso-finals Balderas won by major decision over Thomas Hardy of Spencer.

At 113 lbs. Cruz Arredondo took third place for the Bulldogs. He also had a bye in the first round and then won his next match by pin just 30 seconds into the match. Arredondo lost the next match to Wes Conley of Armuchee but came back in the conso-semis with a win over Garrett Phillips of Jeff Davis by a 7-2 decision. He then lost in the conso-finals to Nicholas Swan of Rockmart having to forfeit for medical reasons. 

Martin Santana (126) also took fourth place, and had a rough time dealing with an injured shoulder though out the tournament. Santana had a bye in the first round and won his next match by pin. Santana lost the next match to Dan Dozier of East Laurens in a close 6-4 decision. Santana came back with a win in the conso-semis over Levi Banks of Lamar County with a pin, but fell in the conso-finals to Jarrett Young of Fitzgerald by a 10-3 decision.

Issiah Wright (195)had a fifth place finish for the Bulldogs. He won his first round match by pin but dropped the second round to Ty Veatch of Chattooga. Wright won his next two matches by pin to get into the conso-semis. Wright lost that match to Allen Woods of Model and then won the fifth place match by pin over Alex Vasquez of Jeff Davis.

Aarel Rodriguez (138) came away with sixth place. He won in the first round by an 8-3 decision but lost in the second to Thomas Zenga of Pepperell by pin. Rodriguez won the next match by a major decision and the next by a 7-2 decision to move into the conso-semis where he lost to Bradley Owens of Jeff Davis. In the fifth place match Rodriguez lost to Daniel Griffin of Berrien by pin to take sixth place.

At 152 lbs. Chandler Lynn finished with sixth place. Lynn had a bye in the first round and then won by pin in the quarterfinals. Lynn then had a tough moment as he lost his next match on a technicality. Lynn lost to Cory Young of Lamar County in the semifinals through a disqualification, which then forced losses in the next two matches to give Lynn a sixth place finish. 

Finally at 220 lbs. Devante Willis took sixth place to earn a spot in the State Tournament. Willis won his opening match by a pin, but fell in the next round to Javon McNeal of Dodge County. Willis picked up a win by pin in the consolation bracket and in the next round won by a 4-1 decision over Zack Edwards of Vidalia. In the conso-semis Chase Fleming of East Laurens defeated Willis and then in the fifth place match Willis lost to Gavin Hill of Northeast Macon to take sixth place.

Also wrestling for Toombs in the Sectionals was Blake Hall (120).
