February 5-- The Toombs County wrestling team won their 6th straight Area Traditional Title last Saturday in Jeff Davis. Toombs County put 10 wrestlers in the finals and came away with 8 champions. Winning Area titles for the Matdogs were Jose Balderas 106 lbs, Cruz Arredondo 113lbs, Martin Santana 126lbs, Ricardo Santana 132lbs, Chandler Lynn 152 lbs, Demetrius Owens 160 lbs, Johnathan Morales 182 lbs, and Rolando Tinoco 285 lbs. Also making the finals were Blake Hall 120 lbs and Devante Willis 220 lbs. Ariel Rodriquez 138 lbs and Isaiah Wright 195 lbs both placed third.

Coach Benton said this about the tournament: “ I was extremely proud of how our guys performed this past weekend. I thought we got some momentum at the Sweet Onion and it certainly carried over to this weekend. I was happy with putting 10 in the finals and when we came away with 8 champs, that broke the record for most champs we have ever had. We have had 7 champs before, but not 8. I can’t say enough about the work these guys put in everyday. Brooks and Sam worked them really hard this last week. I think the fact that they continue to pound on each other in the room every day is what makes the difference when we take the mat."

Toombs will be hosting the Sectional tournament this Friday and Saturday with wrestling starting Friday at 4:00 and Saturday at 9:00.
