February 4-- The Vidalia Indian wrestling team qualified twelve of their fourteen wrestlers for next weekend’s Sectional Tournament. Senior, Tahjah Watts (195) won his third consecutive area championship in dominating fashion. When asked about the tournament result, Tahjah said with a smirk, “Three region championships. It feels great.” Fellow senior, Kaleb Cook (138) won his first area tournament at the end of a very successful and focused season. “I came into this season with one focus and that was the area. Now it’s onto qualifying next week and get to the state finals,” Kaleb commented after his championship match. Sophomore, Thomas Godbee (170) won the area tournament after finishing runner up last year. Godbee stated, “This feels great! I knew I would be happy about it, but this just feels great.”

Lawson Paradice (182) fought his way to the finals finishing second. Dawson Campbell (160) moved up a weight class to take the runner up position as well. In the consolation finals the Indians almost posted a perfect record, winning seven of eight matches. “We had a great medal round. Overall, we won ten out of the thirteen placing matches,” Coach Bobby Blount said at the conclusion of the tournament. Third place finishers were Javarius Worthen (106), Hunter Manning (113), Noah Tippett (120), Markevious Mincey (132), Zack Edwards (220), and Jaylin Burns (285). Robert Allen (126) finished fourth and Damian Townsel (145) finished fifth.

All these wrestlers have earned All Region recognition. Unlike other sports, in wrestling the All Region must be won not voted on by the coaches. First Team All-Region; Tahjah Watts, Kaleb Cook, Thomas Godbee, Lawson Paradice, and Dawson Campbell. Second Team All-Region; Javarius Worthen, Hunter Manning, Noah Tippett, Markevious Mincey, Zack Edwards, Jaylin Burns and Robert Allen. Honorable Mention All-Region; Damian Townsel. Coach James Ferry concluded, “We are ecstatic with the finish, especially in the placing round. We haven’t had a round like that all year. Although we were shooting for a team first place, I must remind myself that five years ago we would be happy with not finishing last. Our guys have done a great job this season to put themselves in a position to qualify for the state tournament in two weeks. God bless and roll tribe.”2 4 19 VHS Wrestling
