The Toombs County High School Bulldogs wrestling team hosted the Sweet Onion Memorial Tournament on Friday and Saturday of last week and had a great showing as they had two wrestlers win their weight division and another five finished as runners up. The Team also came in 1st place overall.

Cruz Arredondo took 1st place at 113 lbs. He won the first round match over Aiden Grant of Harlem by pin and then won the quarterfinals over Zach Davis of Metter by pin. In the semifinals Arredondo won by pin over Ron'Quavious Goldsborough of Tift County. He won the Championship match over Matthew Phillips of Jeff Davis by technical fall.

Ricardo Santana also took 1st place at 138 lbs. Santana started with a technical fall over Matthew Womack of Pierce County and then pinned Jeremy Butler of Ware County. In the semifinals he pinned Aaron Baynon of Statesboro and won the title by pin over Kaleb Cook of Vidalia.

At 106 lbs. Jose Balderas was runner up for the Bulldogs. He won his opening match over Javarius Worthen of Vidalia by technical fall and then won the quarterfinals over Tyler Earick of Cartersville by pin. In the semifinals he got a pin on Caleb Barber of Tift County and then in the finals fell to Jacob Shepard of West Laurens by pin.

Blake Hall took 2nd at 120 lbs. He had a first round bye and then won ove Blake Hagins of Tift by pin, Gabe Hardy of Statesboro by pin, but fell in the finals to Kevin Martin of Fitzgerald.

Martin Santana was 2nd at 126 lbs. Santana opened with a win over Dustin Varnadore of Ware County by pin and then won a 4-0 decision over Zachery Neal of Cartersville. In the semifinals Santana won by pin over Jarrett Young of Fitzgerald, but lost in the finals to Reese Poole of Ware County by pin.

Isaiah Wright was 2nd at 195 lbs. Wright won his first match over O'Marion Guyton of East Laurens by pin and won the quarterfinals by pin over Noah Pace of Dodge County. Wright won his semifinal match by pin against Rashun Hurst of Carterville, but fell in the finals to Tahjah Watts of Vidalia.

The other Bulldogs taking 2nd was Rolando Tinoco at 285 lbs. Tinoco opened with a win over Kaleb Cannon of East Laurens by pin and then won by a 3-1 decision over Isreal Smalls of Ware County. In the semifinals Tinoco took a win by pin over Seth Spillers of Tift County. The finals match was a good one and evenly matched between Tinoco and Ted Dacus of West Laurens. The match was tied at 1-1 at the end of the third period and went to overtime with Dacus getting a 2-1 win to claim the title over Tinoco.

Others wrestling for the Bulldogs were Aarel Rodriguea who took 6th at 132 lbs., Demetrius Owens (160), Chandler Lynn (160), Ethan Halama (195) and DeVante Willis (220).

For the team totals the Bulldogs came in first place with 195.5 points. Second place was Ware County with 189.5, West Laurens was 3rd with 186.5 and Vidalia was 4th with 172.5. From there it was an over 50 point drop to the 5th place team, Fitzgerald.

The Bulldogs will be looking ahead to the Area Tournament next Saturday at Jeff Davis with Sectionals the following week.
