January 28-- The Vidalia Wrestling team competed in the annual Sweet Onion Memorial Classic this past weekend, finishing fourth for the second year in a row and placing nine of the eleven wrestlers entered in the tournament.

Coach James Ferry stated, “Our guys came into this tournament looking to work on their individual techniques to prepare for the Area Tournament next week. We had to rest a couple of guys, but overall our team performed very well.”

Placing for the Indians were Javarius Worthen fourth, Hunter Manning fifth, Markevious Mincey fourth, Damian Townsel sixth, Dawson Campbell fourth, and Jaylin Burns third. Kaleb Cook and Thomas Godbee finished as tournament runner up. The Indians had one tournament champion, Tahjah Watts at 195 pounds.

“I believe Tahjah is the first Indian to win this tournament two times in a row,” commented Coach Bobby Blount. Tahjah added, “It’s great to finish at the Sweet Onion as a champion. Now I can focus on area and state.”

Other wrestlers competing for the Indians were Robert Allen and Zack Edwards.

Coach Ferry concluded with, “It’s time to start focusing on the Area Tournament and getting these guys qualified for sectionals. Our focus has to be on us and the things we can control. God bless and roll tribe.”1 28 19 VHS wrestling
