November 10--  The Montgomery County Eagles defeated the Claxton Tigers for the third time this season and the second time in a week, this time by a score of 37-12 to advance to the second round of the Class A Public State Playoffs.  It was the Eagles first win in the Pecan Grove in Claxton since Bobby Crooms 1964 Eagles team won there 28 – 0.

After three penalties on the Tigers first drive forced them to punt from their own end zone, Montgomery County took advantage of great field position at the Claxton 30 yard line and scored first on a Tristan Denmark 5 yard run with 6:45 left in the first quarter.  Crystian Garcia split the uprights with the PAT and the Eagles led 7 – 0.

Claxton answered with 5:19 remaining in the first quarter when QB Karon Taylor hit Shakari Denson in stride on a 78 yard bomb down the left sideline.  The PAT attempt was blocked and the Eagles still led 7 – 6.  After stopping the Eagles on their next possession, Claxton took their only lead of the night when RB Myles Freeman scampered in from 8 yards out.  The 2 point conversion pass was intercepted and the Tigers led 12 – 7.

With 9:47 remaining in the second quarter the Eagles took the lead back for good when Tristan Denmark scored his second touchdown of the night on an 18 yard run.  Garcia nailed the PAT to give the Eagles a 14 – 12 lead they never would relinquish.

DaQuan Jackson got in on the scoring after he recovered his own fumble at the Eagle 25 yard line, fought through several Tiger tacklers and outran everyone down the right sideline for a 75 yard touchdown run.  Garcia made the PAT once again giving the Eagles a 21 – 12 lead at halftime.

The only scoring in the third quarter was a 37 yard field goal by Crystian Garcia with 30 seconds remaining.  DaQuan Jackson sealed the victory with 2 fourth quarter touchdowns, the first on a 25 yard interception return with 11:48 remaining and a 25 yard run with just 3:53 left to make the final 37 – 12 in favor of the Eagles.

The Eagles will now travel to Buena Vista on Friday night to face another set of Eagles in Marion County in round 2 of the Class A Public State Playoffs with kickoff set for 7:30. Be sure to catch all the action with Jeff Raiford and Brad Collins on Sweet Onion Country 101.7 FM and online here at
