Scott Clarke / ESPN Images(NEW YORK) -- Dwight Howard may need to go under the knife to alleviate pain from a gluteal injury he suffered earlier this month.

League sources tell ESPN the Washington Wizards center will likely need a surgical procedure that would sideline him for a considerable portion of the regular season.

Howard got a recommendation from a nerve specialist on Thursday, ESPN reports, but may seek a second opinion before deciding whether or not to have surgery.

Howard, 32, injured his piriformis muscle during a game against the Portland Trail Blazers on Nov. 18. So far this season, the injury has caused him to miss 12 games.
