Oct 7--Mrs. Ruth Hardy Ortega, age 78 of the Lothair Community of Soperton passed away on Friday afternoon, October 4, 2019 at Fairview Park Hospital in Dublin, Georgia.
Born in Soperton, she was one of eight children born to the late Marion Cecil and Reatha Mae Stevens Hardy.  She grew up in Treutlen County where she graduated from high school, Class of 1959.   After graduation, she moved to Atlanta and worked for Southern Bell Telephone.  While in Atlanta she met and married an Airman with the U.S. Air Force; Paul James Ortega.   During the ensuing years they had four children and moved extensively with her husband’s military assignments.  In 1978 they moved to Alaska where Mrs. Ortega worked with the State of Alaska as a Job Security Specialist until retiring in 2000.  Her husband passed away in 2008.  In 2010 she returned home to Soperton where she has enjoyed the next years tending to the area stray animals, talking with her sisters, shopping on QVC, cooking and flower gardening.  
Mrs. Ortega was the family matriarch.   She provided a stable home life for her children as her husband served in Vietnam as well as other military assignments.  No one left her home hungry and any animal wondering up found a new home.
She and her family have been longtime members of Lothair United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers, Rhodus Hardy, Ray “Dozie” Hardy, Roy Hardy, Robert “Buddy” Hardy, a special uncle, Hancil Hardy and aunt, Lucille Hardy.
Mrs. Ortega leaves behind, her children, Paula Ortega, Wasilla, Alaska, Brian Ortega (Desiree), Wasilla, Alaska, Sam Ortega, Soperton, GA, Heidi Barbina, Soperton, GA, three sisters, Bette Jo Jackson, Soperton, GA, Kathryn Manning, Fayetteville, GA, Marilyn Knapp (Barry), Soperton, GA, sister in laws, Hazel Hardy, Shirley Hardy, Barbara Hardy, four grandchildren, Svetalana, John Tyler, Emily Ruth, Sadie, two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 7:00 pm on Thursday, October 10, 2019 in the Williams Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home with Reverend Mike Collins officiating.
Her family will receive friends on Thursday, at the funeral home, from 6:00 pm until the hour of service.
Mrs. Ortega will be laid to rest beside her husband at Fort Richardson National Cemetery at Joint Base Elmendorf – Richardson, Anchorage, Alaska.
