Oct. 31--Mr. Woodrow “Woody” Poole, age 88, of Soperton passed away on Monday evening, October 29, 2018 at his home.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at Holton Chapel Advent Christian Church with Reverend Morris Brantley and Reverend M. L. Barber officiating.

Mr. Poole will be laid to rest in Holton Chapel Cemetery.

His family will receive friends on Wednesday, at the church, from 1:00 pm until the hour of service.

Born in Treutlen County, he is the last living of five sons born to the late Henry Clayton Poole and Hattie Holton. He was a graduate of Gillis Springs School before being drafted into the U. S. Army where he served during the Korean Conflict. Upon being honorably discharged he returned home and attended Brewton Parker College for a short time while working at Waller’s Feed Mill in Soperton. In 1954 he married Mary Jo Holton. He and Mary Jo had grown up together, attended school together, attended church and were baptized together. Within a few years he accepted employment with Good Year Tire and Rubber in Macon. The newlyweds moved to Macon where they lived during his 33 years with Goodyear; retiring as the Store Manager in Warner Robins. Soon after retiring in the early 1990s they returned home to Treutlen County. Mr. Poole was referred to as “The Goatman” for his many years of raising goats as pets. He loved all animals; fed deer at his backdoor and constantly carried cat food in his truck for the many abandoned cats found at the dumpsters.

He and his wife were lifelong members at Holton Chapel where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, Teacher, Choir Director and Director of the Youth Ministry. Their commitment to their church was evidenced by their years of driving weekly from Macon to Soperton to attend their home church.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Cecil, Luther, Clyde and Wilburn Poole.

Mr. Poole is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Jo Holton Poole, nieces, Suzanne Hutchinson, Adrian, GA, Sherry Mathis, Dublin, GA and numerous lifelong friends and extended family members.

Serving as pallbearers will be: Tommy and Teddy Holton, Terry and Larry Henry, Ray Allen, Gibson Way, Jeff Watts and Tommy Dykes.
