November 17--  UPDATE - Vidalia Police Chief Frank Waits said Friday night investigators are "chasing leads" in the Joiner murder case.  Anyone with any information is asked to call CRIMESTOPPERS at 386-4480.

November 16--  The manager of a Vidalia men's store was shot and killed Friday during what Vidalia police say was an armed robbery.

brookeThirty-one-year old Brooke Joiner was found in R.J. Pope's Men's Store on East First Street by a customer who rushed to a next door insurance office to call 911.  Lisa Pruitt, manager of the adjacent Palmer's Furniture, said she heard the sound of a gunshot about one p.m.  Joiner was rushed to Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia where she died of a head wound.

She was a 2006 graduate of Vidalia High School and mother of a seven-year-old boy.

popesThe G-B-I and Vidalia police are investigating. 

At a late afternoon news conference, Vidalia Police Chief Frank Waits said, "Right now we're following all leads and gathering every piece of evidence that we can.  We ask for the community, if they know anything, to please contact us.  No lead or piece of evidence is too small."

Chief Waits dispelled social media rumors that a suspect had been cornered and was holding hostages at a Vidalia liquor store, "Now regarding suspects being spotted, we get calls and we follow every lead, but as far as hostages and things like that, no.  I think Heritage Academy locked down their school, but he was headed westbound in a different direction from the schools.

The chief also said officers have only "very poor grade video" regarding the crime.

Toombs County Coroner Ron Hall says the victim's body will go to the state crime lab as part of the investigation.
