October 10--  The City of Vidalia issued the following this morning regarding Hurricane Michael.

HURRICANE MICHAEL UPDATE 10/10/2018 AS OF 9:30 AM

Hurricane Michael has been upgraded to a Category 4 Hurricane overnight.  The National Weather Service has upgraded our status to a Tropical Storm Warning for the Vidalia / Toombs County area.  Our area can expect Tropical Storm Force winds between 50-60 MPH.  There is a possibility of 5"- 7" of rain.  There is also the possibility of damaging wind gusts with isolated tornadoes.    PLEASE STAY OFF THE ROADS tonight and throughout the morning tomorrow. It is predicted this storm will be in our area Wednesday night, with the worst of the effects from 6:00 a.m. until possibly 12:00 p.m. on Thursday. 

There are no shelters opened in our area. 

  • Now is the time to prepare for the potential impacts Hurricane Michael may have on our area.  Residents are encouraged to prepare their homes and property. 
  • Ensure outside items which may be blown around/away by anticipated Tropical Storm Force winds are secured.  
  • Be prepared for downed trees and extended power outages.
  • Have a supply of water, food and essential medications.
  • Have a family plan.
  • Please remember your pets. Please bring them in. If you leave the area, please take your pets with you.
  • Those living in mobile homes, it is recommended you seek shelter.
  • Place you roll-out garbage carts as close to your residence as possible to keep them from being displaced and debris/garbage scattered in the wind.

The City of Vidalia does not have sand bags to distribute.

Garbage services will remain on their normal schedule through 2:00 p.m. today. Customers who are not serviced today will be picked up on Friday and/or Saturday.
