June 29--  Vidalia police have arrested a man accused of stealing jewelry from K.E. Butler Jewelers earlier this month.

swainTwenty-eight-year-old Darren Swain, Jr. of Sand Spur Lane in Toombs County was arrested June 22 when Vidalia police assisted by deputies from Toombs and Appling Counties and officers from the Georgia State Patrol were conducting an operation in Vidalia looking for subjects wanted on various warrants.  Officers attempted to stop Swain's vehicle and a chase ensued.  It ended when he wrecked the car on Broadfoot Boulevard and fled into the woods where he was captured and arrested.

After he was booked, it was discovered he was wanted in Henry County for a probation violation.  He was picked up by Henry County officers June 26 and will be returned to Toombs County to face robbery charges once the Henry County case is adjudicated.

Police have video of Swain casing the jewelry store on June 7. He later returned and asked the proprietor to show him a tennis bracelet and diamond ring.  Once they were removed from the display case, he took them and fled the store.  The police report said they were valued at $10,169.00.
