Montgomery County Board of Commissioners & Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency

PRESS RELEASE

September 8, 2017

Chairman Leland Adams, in cooperation with Montgomery County Emergency Management Director Donnie Daniels, has declared a Local State of Emergency for Montgomery County due to the potential impact of Hurricane Irma on Montgomery County. Please be advised that this is not an evacuation order. The National Weather Service released an update at 12:00PM today concerning the threat of Hurricane Irma in south Georgia. Based on the current track of Hurricane Irma, weather conditions are expected to worsen by Sunday evening.

County Offices and the Solid Waste Convenience Centers will be closed on Monday, September 11th. The Board of Commissioners’ regular scheduled meeting for Monday, September 11th at 5:30 PM has been rescheduled for Thursday, September 14th at 5:30 PM.

As a result of the impact from Hurricane Irma, there are local organizations offering their facilities as “Good Samaritan” shelters for local citizens. Citizens that live in mobile homes are encouraged to seek safe shelter as a result of tropical force storm winds that threaten our area.  Brewton Parker College, First Baptist Church of Mount Vernon and Calvary’s Grace Baptist Church will be opening their facilities to receive citizens that are in need of a storm shelter. Again, these shelters are Good Samaritan shelters with basic facilities that include bathrooms and water fountains. These shelters are not Red Cross shelters. The address, opening times and contacts for the Good Samaritan shelters are as follows:
