February 24--  A local testament to those who gave their lives for our country looks a lot better today.

{mosimage}Workmen from Clark and Shaw Monument Company used chemicals and pressure washing to remove stains from the Toombs County Veterans Memorial on Highway 280 East.

The effort was led by former Navy SEAL Lee Burton who said, "I think it's very important we remember these sacrifices.  It's also a testament to those of us who fought and survived that can come by here and remember how lucky we are.  We've got so many freedoms that are guarded by people like this.  It's a monument for everybody in the area that has family and friends who have given everything so we can have the life that we do."

Shirley Curl with the VFW Auxiliary works to keep the memorial maintained and knows what it means to families who have lost loved ones.

"I was here one day working and there was a gentleman and his wife who came from Collins.  This is the one place they have to come to pay tribute to his father who's name is on that monument.  They come and put a little flower or flag there for him on special occasions.  When I spoke with them, I was bound and determined this monument is going to be kept up," she said.

Mrs. Curl and Lee Burton thanked Clark and Shaw who cleaned the marble monument at no charge.
