February 15--  A local resident reports a phone scam.

He got a call on his Bellsouth landline from a person who said they were with  Verizon.  They offered to review his account in order to save him money.  He was suspicious because they called on his landline instead of his cell so he put them off.

Upon calling Verizon, he was told the company is aware of such calls from people trying to obtain information used to pay bills online such as bank account numbers and passwords.  Verizon says they never call asking for such info.

The basic rule:  Never give anyone personal info on the phone.  You don't know with whom you're talking.
