10 6 18 VHS FootballThe Vidalia Indians took a 14-8 lead into the half, then exploded for 29 second half points to defeat Jeff Davis 43-15 Friday night in Homecoming 2018. With the win the Indians move to 6-0 on the year and 2-0 in Region 2AA play. Takira Thomas was named Homecoming Queen at Halftime before a large crowd at Buck Cravey Field.

The Indians once again struck quick, starting the game on offense at their own 17 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage Nyshun Bell went 82 yards to the 2 yard line and on the very next play Tahjah Watts took it in for the first score of the night to make it 6-0 following a failed 2 point conversion.

The Indians defense held the Yellow Jackets and forced a punt which was downed at the Indian 27 yard line. But on the next play a Jeff Davis defender broke through the line and stuck his head on the ball causing Chris Gay to lose possession of the ball with Jeff Davis recovering on the Indian 26 yard line.

But again the defense would hold the Jackets, forcing a field goal try which struck the back of a Jacket player giving the ball to the Indians on their own 10 yard line.

Vidalia would punch it out of the shadow of their own goal post but two penalties killed the drive and the Indians were forced to punt.

The Jackets started the drive at midfield and took only 7 plays to score on a Britt Metts to Austin Wood 3 yard pass and following a 2 point conversion the Indians trailed for just the second time all year with 7:09 to go in the half.

But the Indians would answer on their next possession, driving the ball 63 yards on 8 plays with Chris Gay capping off the drive on a 26 yard run to make the score 14-8 with 3:54 to go following Gay’s 2 point conversion.

The second half was all Vidalia. The Indians would force a Jeff Davis punt after an 8 play drive by the Jackets on the opening possession of the half giving the ball to the Indians on their own 40 yard line. Three plays later Chris Gay took it around the right end and walked into the end zone from 14 yards out to give the Indians a 22-8 lead following Grady Blount’s PAT. On the score the Jackets were assessed two 15 yard penalties which allowed the Indians to kick from the Jacket 30 yard line.

On the kick Grady Blount executed a perfect squib kick which bounced off a Jeff Davis receiver and was recovered by Bryant Phillips at the Jeff Davis 16. Another penalty on the Jackets gave the ball to the Indians at the Jeff Davis 8 yard line. On the next play Nyshun Bell ran it in from 8 yards out to give the Indians a 29-8 lead with 6:52 to go in the third quarter.

That took care of the scoring until the fourth quarter where Rodney Wardlaw scored twice on two separate 57 yard runs; One with 7:11 to go in the game and the final with 3:22 to go in the game. Jeff Davis added a late score to make the final score 43-15.(Picture by John Conner)
