11 21 17 VHS WrestlingNovember 21-- The Vidalia High School Wrestling team defeated four teams on their way to a second place finish at the Bear Duals at Houston County High School. The Indians defeated Mary Persons 40 – 18 winning eight of the eleven matches wrestled. In the second round, Vidalia defeated Dodge County 58 – 6. The Indians beat host school, Houston County, 66 – 6 setting themselves up for the semifinals. In the semifinals, Vidalia faced another undefeated team, Warner Robins, the winner facing Locust Grove in the finals. The grappling Indians beat Warner Robins 50 -18, losing only three matches; one of those by forfeit. “We set a pace in the first four matches that the other teams could not maintain and it made a difference in the matches,” indicated Coach Bobby Blount. In the finals Locust Grove took an early lead through the first two matches, then Vidalia ran through the middle weights winning the next four matches and taking an 18 – 9 lead. Both teams traded wins for the next four weight classes. However, in the end the Indians had to forfeit three of the final five weight classes wrestled and lost to Locust Grove 24 – 36. Head wrestling coach Dr. James Ferry stated, “We are very pleased with the start of our season. This was a good day for our guys to work on techniques we have been practicing.” The day was highlighted by five Indians going undefeated on the day; Quadir Harris, Alderries Tillery, Chason Brogdon, Tom Godbee, and Tahjah Watts. Coach Steve Fullam, “Cory, Tom, and Razor demonstrated the type of grit we are looking for in our guys this season.” Four other Indians won four of their matches; Kaleb Matthews, Markevious Mincey, Elijah Thornton, and Razor Ramon Escalera. The Indians next travel to Cartersville, Georgia for the Colonel Harvey Robinson Duals.
