Treutlen vs PortalNovember 2--  The Treutlen Vikings rallied from double digit deficits several times but fell short in a 46 – 39 shootout with the Portal Panthers on Thursday night at Bobby Driggers Stadium in Soperton.

Portal scored first on just their third play of the game on a 57 yard TD run by Senior RB Craig Ware to give the Panthers a 7 – 0 lead.  The Vikings tied the game on their second possession of the game when RB Tefarje Jordan ran it in from a yard out.  A Kamron Jordan 77 yard reception to the Panther 5 yard line set up the touchdown.

The visiting Panthers extended their lead on two more TD runs by Craig Ware of 8 and 18 yards plus a Carson Davis 27 yard field goal to take a 24 – 7 lead over Treutlen with 2:31 left in the second quarter.

With the Vikings driving just before the half, the game was delayed for an hour as a Portal player was injured which required the Air Evac helicopter to transport him to the hospital with a serious leg injury.  After play resumed, the Vikings struck on the next play for a 39 yard touchdown pass from QB Sabo Mitchell to WR Kamron Jordan with just 27 seconds remaining, cutting the lead to 24 – 13 at halftime.

The Vikings took the opening possession of the second half and scored in less than two minutes on a 9 yard Tefarje Jordan run.  The two point conversion pass was unsuccessful and Treutlen only trailed 24 – 19.

With 7:51 remaining in the third quarter RB Brian Ware scored on a 7 yard run extending the lead to 31 – 19 for Portal, but the Vikings answered that score as well on a 19 yard TD pass from Mitchell to Javis Wise.  The PAT was good and the Vikings only trailed by 5 once again, 31 – 26.

Panther RB Craig Ware added to his career night, scoring on his next two carries with runs of 19 and 80 yards, extending the Panther lead to 46 – 26 with 11:10 left in the game.

Trailing by 20 points, the Vikings began their final comeback of the night, scoring on an 8 yard pass from Mitchell to Senior RB John Shivers with 5:25 left.  The Viking defense stiffened and stopped the Panthers on their next possession, setting up another touchdown with another 8 yard pass from Mitchell to WR Kamron Jordan.  The PAT was successful cutting the lead to 46 – 39 with 1:12 remaining in the game.  The ensuing onside kick was recovered by Portal ending the comeback threat.

Viking Sophomore QB Sabo Mitchell had his best game of the year with 368 yards passing and 4 touchdowns with another 139 yards rushing.  Portal Senior RB Craig Ware led the Panthers with 272 yards rushing and 5 TD’s.

Treutlen ends their season with a 1 – 9 record, losing their last 8 in a row and say goodbye to only 3 seniors, Shane Hattaway, Javis Wise, and John Shivers.
