PSX 20170826 005746 Small versionAugust 26--  The home opener for the Treutlen Vikings was delayed for 40 minutes due to lightning in the area but turned out good for the home team as the Vikings took down the Portal Panthers for the third straight year by a score of 28-18 at Bobby Driggers Stadium Friday night.

The Panthers got things started first on a rainy night in Soperton when Senior RB Craig Ware ran it off right guard for 13 yards to cap a 76 yard drive with 3:24 remaining in the first quarter.  The two point conversion attempt was good when Junior Connor Washington ran it in near the right corner pylon to give Portal an early 8-0 lead.

On the following kickoff, Viking returner James Byrd ran the kickoff back 48 yards to give Treutlen great field position at the Portal 36 yard line.  Treutlen answered 5 plays later when Junior RB Tafarje Jordan ran it in from 3 yards out with 1:46 left in the first quarter.  After a penalty on the 2 point conversion put the ball at the Portal 8 yard line, the pass attempt was no good and Treutlen trailed 8-6.

With just 59 seconds before the half, Viking Sophomore QB Sabo Mitchell ran up the middle from a yard out to complete an 81 yard drive.  The 2 point conversion pass from Mitchell to Javis Wise was good and Treutlen led 14-8 at the half.

A Treutlen fumble on the second half kickoff gave Portal the momentum and the ball at the Viking 23 yard line.  Just 2 plays later, RB Craig Ware went untouched from a yard out for the touchdown.  The PAT attempt from Kicker Carson Davis was good and the Panthers had the lead again 15-14 with 11:37 left in the third quarter.

After a jarring hit from a Viking defender, Portal QB Fischer Oglesby had to leave the game for a play and the ensuing snap was mishandled by backup QB Connor Washington.  Treutlen recovered at the Portal 36.  Again, Treutlen took advantage of the great field position and Tafarje Jordan got his second touchdown on the night with a 1 yard run.  QB Sabo Mitchell ran in the two point conversion and the Vikings had the lead back for good 22-15 with 4:27 remaining in the third quarter.

With 1:50 left in the third quarter, Portal Kicker Carson Davis split the uprights with a 35 yard field goal to cut the Treutlen lead to 22-18 but the Panthers would get no closer.

The Viking offensive line took control of the game in the fourth quarter and Treutlen added another touchdown with 7:34 left in the game as QB Sabo Mitchell hit Sophomore WR Kamron Jordan on a beautiful 21 yard fade pass in the left corner of the end zone.  The Pat attempt was wide right and Treutlen led 28-18.  The last two offensive possessions for Panthers ended in interceptions by CB Kamron Jordan to seal the victory, just as he had done last year in Portal.

Viking QB Sabo Mitchell led the offense with 121 yards rushing and a touchdown to go with 72 yards passing and another touchdown.  Junior RB Tafarje Jordan added 112 yards on the ground on 16 carries.  Juniors Trevor Byrd and Chris Stone led the Viking defense with 11 and 10 tackles respectively.

Treutlen improves to 1-1 on the season and will host AA Bleckley County at Bobby Driggers Stadium Friday night at 7:30.  Be sure to catch all the action with Dr. John Pournelle and Jeff Raiford on Sweet Onion Country 101.7 FM and online at www.southeastgeorgiatoday.com
