May 18—The Vidalia Board of Education announced Thursday afternoon at the Media Center at Vidalia High School that Coach Matt Huddleston is the new Head Coach of the Vidalia High School Lady Indians Basketball team. Coach Huddleston takes over the program after the retirement of Coach Chunk Reid.

Coach Huddleston comes to Vidalia most recently as the Director of Coaching for the Georgia Metros Girls Basketball Club in Atlanta. He coached there from April 2015 and previously from 1993-2012 where he helped coach Five National Championship Titles, 25 AAU All-Americans, 12 Nike All-Americans, 4 McDonald’s High School All-Americans and over 100 players that earned scholarships in college, including Maya Moore of the University of Connecticut. He was the Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina from July 2012 to April 2015.

“It is about the community first and secondarily to be able to step into a legacy program where the expectations are already set and nobody is walking into the gym to be mediocre. I like to coach champions and I think that is what this town is built for. It is not about filling Coach Reid’s shoes it is about carrying on his legacy. There will not be a day where we won’t forget who built the foundation of this program. “ Coach Huddleston said.

“During the interview process Coach Huddleston did a super job. He has a philosophy about the game and what he intends to do and what type of game he wants to play. We are pleased and I think he is going to step in and do a very good job.” Coach Chunk Reid said.

VHS Principal John Sharpe stated, “We are excited about Coach Huddleston being able to come in and what he brings and especially in player development. He has a wide background of knowledge and he will give our girls that even want to play at the next level a lot of opportunities with his connections at the collegiate level. He is a great guy and he is going to be good in classroom as a history teacher because of his ability to connect and communicate with his students and players.”
