KeepingConnectedLeft to Right: Derrick Knight, La’Derrica Knight, Eula Knight, Mary OglesbyAugust 8--  This summer season, the Connection Church of Vidalia filled more than 80 backpacks with school supplies for children of single parents attending Southeastern Technical College (STC). Thanks to the Connection Church, STC was able to distribute these backpacks to those families in need.

Weeks after their distribution, STC and the Connection Church have received several letters of thanks and gratification. The backpacks filled with notebooks, pencils, and supplies were definite summer blessings for STC families.

One of the most heartwarming responses came from Eula Knight and her two children, La’Derrica Knight and Derrick Knight. Eula Knight is a current student at STC. Last year her husband passed away due to a severe medical issue. Since then she has learned that her daughter also suffers from the same medical issue.

Over the course of the last year, Eula has had to juggle the cost of her own tuition with the medical needs and life necessities of her two children.

“It’s hard when you are trying to make ends meet,” states Eula. “What do you do when you have difficulty feeding and providing for your family?”

Back to School season is one of the most difficult times for struggling families. An expansive school supply list distributed by teachers fill most struggling parents with dread. Many of the supplies are items that are financial burdens these families cannot afford.

Eula states: “These lists are the one thing that can make or break your budget… When your children don’t have the materials listed, you risk compromising your child’s ability to learn.”

The day that Eula heard a knock on her door to find that they were receiving backpacks for both of her children, will be one she never forgets.

“The looks on my kids’ faces will not be forgotten,” states Eula. “Words cannot express how grateful I am.”
