May 17--Mrs. Edith Marcum Lain Thompson, age 97, of Langley, South, Carolina, died Monday, May 15, 2017, at her home, after an extended illness.  She was a native of Toombs County, and was a graduate of Johnson Corner High School.  She attended Brewton Parker College in Mt. Vernon, and was a graduate of Georgia Teachers College in Statesboro.  She taught school in Johnson Corner, New Branch, Mt. Moriah, and Toombs Central Schools.  For many years, she taught piano in home, and retired in 1965 with the Federal Government at Fort Stewart.  She was a member of the Rocky Creek Baptist Church and was a former member of the Toombs County Chapter Order of Eastern Star.  She was preceded in death by two husbands, Harris Lain and Reverend William “Bill” Thompson; parents, John Henry Marcum and Donnie Mae Kight Marcum; two brothers, Howard Marcum and Frank Marcum; and niece, Susan Cheryl Marcum.

Mrs. Thompson is survived by a sister, Jodonne Marcum Reese and husband Ernest of Langley; five nieces, Deann Marcum Odom and husband Ronald of Lyons, Polly Marcum Cowart and husband Enoch of Reidsville, Pam Marcum Griggers and husband Johnny of Lyons, Edie Bennett McDaniel of Statesboro, and Brenda Marcum Waters of Glennville; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

The funeral service will be held Friday, May 19th at 3:00 p.m. in the Rocky Creek Baptist Church with Reverend Herb Sons and Reverend Bill Black officiating.  Burial will follow in the Hardens Chapel Cemetery.  

The family will assemble at the residence of Pam and Johnny Griggers, 480 West Oglethorpe Ave., Lyons, will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.
