October 27-- A new director has been named for the Vidalia Recreation Department.

Vidalia City Manager Nick Overstreet says Homer Waller of Vidalia will succeed Tommy Sasser when he retires the end of the year. Waller is currently with Altamaha Bank and Trust following 28 years in charge of the Plant Hatch Recreation Area.

"I learned to swim at the Rec Department.  I worked and played for Coach Smith and Tommy Sasser taught me how to swim.  I did my internship for my degree at the Vidalia Recreation Department and I guess I've come full circle.

"Coach Smith started this Rec Department and he's one of the few men outside of my Daddy that I hold in high regard and who helped mold me.  I just want to continue what Coach Smith started and what Tommy has carried on and sit down with Nick and city council and be a part of any changes or improvements they want to make.

"I want kids to be able to grow up and think back when they went through the Rec Department and have fond memories of it like I do," he said.

Overstreet says longtime Assistant Recreation Director Gary Adams is also retiring in December and will be succeeded by Matt Smith who comes to Vidalia from the Laurens County Recreation Department, however, Smith will have the title Director of Rec Department Operations.

"I feel like they will do a good job in leading our department because they do have some big shoes to fill," Overstreet said.
