October 10-- The annual Toombs-Montgomery Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament can't be held this year because of owner Andy Page's decision to close Hawk's Point Golf Course in Vidalia.
The tournament was scheduled to be held this month before Page's decision September 29th.
Debbie Evans with the Chamber says the decision was made this morning, "Our golf committee met last week and discussed whether we could take the tournament out of town and do a tournament that met our standards. They agreed we couldn't and made a recommendation to the board.
"Our board met this morning and our fear was we wouldn't have the participation out of town. Also, we rely on our tent sponsors who pay a good bit of money to come out and take part in the tournament. With participation being down, we didn't feel like we were giving our sponsors a good return on investment. In everything we do, we want to make sure our members have a good return on investment and that it will help their business. So, for that reason, we decided not to do the golf tournament this year," she said.
Evans said on average the tournament raised about $10,000 each year to support chamber programs.
